Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is widely known as the "gold standard" for lymphedema management. It consists of four main components: Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Compression, Exercise, and Skin Care.
Treatment consists of two phases:
Phase One typically is performed in the clinic and consists of manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, exercise, skincare, and education. It may be recommended during this phase that you received daily treatment, or treatment several times a week for a few weeks, based on the severity of your condition.
Phase Two is self-management and incorporates the use of compression garments, a home exercise program, good skincare, and other individual-specific recommendations based on your situation. You will be provided with training and education on any self-management program before Phase One has ended.
